Rewari District, established on 1 November 1989, emerged from territories previously belonging to Gurgaon and Mohindergarh districts. Renowned as the Brass City, Rewari, an ancient city, lies 82 kilometers southwest of Delhi. Bounded by Jhajjar, Mohindergarh, and Gurgaon(now Gurugram) districts on the north, west, and east, respectively, Rewari shares its southern border with the Alwar district of Rajasthan.
Legend has it that during the era of the Kauravs and Pandavs, a king named Rewat had a daughter named Rewati, affectionately called Rewa. The king founded a city named Rewa Wadi in her honor. Rewati later married Balram, Lord Krishna’s elder brother, and the city became known as Rewari over time.
The district comprises two sub-divisions, Bawal and Kosli, three tehsils (Rewari, Kosli, and Bawal), and five blocks (Rewari, Jatusana, Khol, Bawal, and Nahar). Criminal administration is managed through thirteen police stations, including City Rewari, Sadar Rewari, Rampura, and others. With 412 villages and 358 gram panchayats as of 12 March 2018, the district showcases a vibrant rural landscape.
Noteworthy historical figures from Rewari include Sir Shadi Lal, a former Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Lahore and a member of the Judicial Committee, Privy Council, London. Born in 1872, Sir Shadi Lal passed away on 27 March 1945.
The land of Rewari has a proud legacy in India’s struggle for independence, with warriors like Rao Tula Ram and Krishan Gopal fighting against British rule in 1857. Recognized as Veer Bhumi, the people of Rewari take pride in their contributions to the Indian Army.
The Sessions Division in Rewari commenced operations on 9 May 2005, marking its separation from the Narnaul Sessions Division. As of 12 March 2018, the district boasts various courts, including those of the District and Sessions Judge, Additional District and Sessions Judges, Civil Judges, and a Chief Judicial Magistrate.
Furthermore, the Sub Division of Kosli houses the Court of Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division), established five years ago. In Sub Division Bawal, a similar court was inaugurated in May 2017. Both sub-divisions contribute to the legal landscape, and the District Bar Association has a substantial membership of 1475 as of 12 March 2018.
